How Should We Think About Bursts?
نویسنده
چکیده
Population bursts of action potentials are the most prominent feature of activity recorded from mam-malian neuronal networks grown on MEAs. In the intact brain or spinal cord, they are considered variously as motor patterns, sensory gates, sleep spindles, UP-states, developmental signals, epileptiform activity, or memories. I prefer to remain agnostic about what bursts " mean " in vitro, and to study them in whatever way suits the purpose at hand. In this talk, I summarize MEA work from my lab over the past decade, focusing on our continually changing perspectives on bursts, as new results and methods arrive. Our overarching goal is to use MEAs and optics to study the basics of learning, memory, and information processing. Cultured networks are more easily accessed, imaged, controlled, and manipulated (physically, chemically, electrically, optically) than are any animal models, but it is important to keep in mind their many limitations and simplifications. To bring them closer to animal models, we developed the idea of embodying cultured networks, so they could interact with the world, express behavior and receive sensory input. 1,2 We developed ways to control bursting, and have recently verified that by doing so, one can more reliably study learning in vitro.

Mistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”
Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...

متن کاملShould or should not forensic psychiatrists think about free will?
The forensic psychiatrist's task is often considered to be tightly connected to the concept of free will. Yet, there is also a lack of clarity about the role of the concept of free will in forensic psychiatry. Recently, Morse has argued that forensic psychiatrists should not mention free will in their reports or testimonies, and, moreover, that they should not even think about free will. Starti...
متن کاملThe Methodology of Musical Ontology: Descriptivism and Its Implications
I investigate the widely held view that fundamental musical ontology should be descriptivist rather than revisionary, that is, that it should describe how we think about musical works, rather than how they are independently of our thought about them. I argue that if we take descriptivism seriously then, first, we should be sceptical of artontological arguments that appeal to independent metaphy...
